Additional Facts

Wood
Wood is still considered one of the most popular choices when it comes to window frames. Wood is energy efficient and is a non-thermal conductor so it will not lose heat or take heat from the outside in. However, you have to remember the maintenance factor with wood frames. The wood will need to be treated either with paint or stain on an ongoing basis and wood can shrink, warp or rot. Due to the deterioration of wood, your wood framed windows will need to replace often and may not be an economical choice.

Aluminum or vinyl clad wood frames
Vinyl clad window frames are not as energy efficient as wood frames with aluminum and are known for hiding water which could lead to costly deterioration hiding under the cladding. These are probably not the best choice for maintenance free energy efficient windows.

Aluminum clad wood frames
These window frames are much more energy efficient, but because they are made with cladding, they too are subject to deterioration that can be hidden.

Fiberglass or Composite frames
Fiberglass frames cost more than other types and need to be screwed together which creates weak joints in the sashes which cause energy loss. When Fiberglass is hit along the grain it will crack causing major problems which makes them more fragile than aluminum or wood.

Low-E Label
If you want an energy efficient window you should avoid a totally aluminum solution. Your best bet is to look for the low-E energy label on the window. This is evidence that it has low emissivity gas and will provide cool the room down in the summer and keep the room warm in the winter months. Low-e glass is coated with layers of metallic oxides which is transparent to the eye, but will help eliminate unwanted UV rays. Wood interior with PVC or Vinyl exterior frames is one of the best solutions.
