About Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay is a city in Ontario Canada with a population of approximately 110,000. The cities name was originated from the large Thunder Bay at the head of Lake Superior. The city encompasses an area of approximately 330 square kilometres, which includes the townships of Neebing, and McIntyre, as well as the former cities of Fort William and Port Arthur.

Thunder Bay’s economy took a beating due to high labour costs and lack of innovation in forestry, however, there has been extensive efforts made to attract knowledge-based industries in the fields of molecular medicine and genomics. The largest employers in the city are Lakehead District School Board, the Government of Ontario, Bowater Forest Products and Bombardier Transportation.

The climate of Thunder Bay is strongly influenced by Lake Superior with cooler summer average temperatures of 17.7 C (63.9 F) and winter temperatures that can drop severely to lows of -36 C (-33 F) and -58 C (-72 F) with wind chill. On the bright side, Thunder Bay promises to be a very sunny city with 2121 average hours of sunshine every year.

Thunder Bay is surrounded by panoramic views such as the ones found at the Sleeping Giant or the view as you follow Lake Superior’s shoreline on the TransCanada Highway. The main tourist attractions include Fort William Historical Park and a statue of Terry Fox which is located at the Terry Fox Memorial and Lookout that was erected near to where he was forced to stop his run.

Additional Facts

How is your energy bill?
Leaky windows or doors can account for 25% of energy loss to your home. You can have an energy test done to your home to determine how it rates and what specific doors or windows should be replaced immediately.

Reduce the noise
If you have trouble sleeping or your neighbour holds jam sessions in their garage that drives you crazy at 4 am, you might want to cut the noise with insulated or double pane windows. They will help you get the sleep you need.

Let the light shine in
If you want to bring more light into a room, a skylight will bring in thirty percent more light than vertical windows of the same size.

Painting your doors
Keeping your house looking good may include simple touch ups like painting the exterior doors. This is an easy fix-it, but make sure you buy exterior paint only for this job or you may be painting it again next year.

You should value R-value
R-value is the resistance of the window to heat transfer, therefore, the higher the R-value, in a window, the better energy efficiency and insulating properties in it.

To replace windows or not
Window replacement can become an absolutely necessity when you are experiencing water and mould on window ledges or drafts around the windows.

To Drape or Not
Instead of adding draperies, or window treatments to a room, you could have windows installed that have a frosted or bubbled glass that will capture light without visibility. These are a good solution for bathrooms in your Thunder Bay home.

Hire a Contractor
If you are hiring a contractor to install your windows or doors, you need to ask; does the contractor you are considering have experience in window and door replacements? Do they have a license? As well, most reputable contractors carry insurance should a problem arise during the installation. Check their track record and get more than one quote, preferably three.
