About St. Catharines

The city of St. Catharine’s in Ontario Canada is located in the region of Niagara and has a metropolitan population of approximately 400 thousand people. It is located in southern Ontario south of the city of Toronto and is in very close proximity to the United States border through Fort Erie.

St. Catharine’s is a part of the micro climate which is considerably warmer than its Toronto neighbour. This warmth in temperature is due to the influence of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and the shelter from the Niagara Escarpment which allows for fruit trees and wineries to flourish. Summers tend to be warm, throughout July and August it is common to find temperatures in the 30’s C. The winters are on average around -5, or – 10 C. It can, however, receive snow as a result of the lake effect storms.

Gardens, parks and trails can be found throughout St. Catherine’s in abundance which has allowed the city to acquire the nickname “The Garden City”. Manufacturing is the city’s main industry with General Motors of Canada being the city’s largest employer.

The Welland Canal passes through St. Catharine’s and is a means of shipping vessels to travel from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, otherwise the Queen Elizabeth Highway and the Highway 406 are the two main highways in and out of the city.

Additional Facts

Choose a contractor
When choosing a contractor, always get three quotes from three different contractors before making your choice. Remember, price is not all you need to consider. You need to choose the best person for your project and you need to understand what defines the quote the contractor gives you. What part is labour, what part is hardware, window, door etc? Know what you are getting for your money.
There are lists of reputable contractors from the St. Catharine’s area on the internet or you can obtain suggestions from your local home improvement stores. Research the contractors by determining if they are a member of the better business bureau and review potential complaints about past projects they have been involved in.

Know what you want and need
When looking into window and door replacements, it is good to communicate which direction the replacement will be facing for instance a northerly exposed window or door may determine a specific style to ensure energy efficiency. Even though St. Catharine’s is a warmer city in Ontario, heat loss and air conditioning loss should be taken into consideration.
