About Peterborough

Peterborough is a city in central Ontario, Canada, situated on the Otanabee River with a population of 118,975. Because of its historical and present day role in technology and manufacturing industries, Peterborough is nicknamed “The Electric City”. Many multi-national companies such as Rolls Royce, Fisher Gauge, General Electric, Siemens and Bryston have operations within the city.

Located on the northeaster edge of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, the city is noted as the gateway to the Kawarthas, a popular recreational region of Ontario, also known as “cottage country”.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the Peterborough area was home to First Nations groups. Many groups have occupied the area including Woodland Natives, the Iroquois, the Mississaugas and the Algonquin People. Petroglyphs can be found Northeast of the city as well as in Petroglyphs Provincial Park and Serpent Mounds.

Peterborough has a growing art scene. Artspace is one of Canada’s earliest artist-run art collectives that help the growth of contemporary artists. There are many key cultural attractions in the city, which include the Art Gallery of Peterborough, the Kawartha Artists Gallery, the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, the New Stages theatre company, the Peterborough Folk Festival, the Peterborough Singers and the Starfire Band.

Did you know?

Did you know you can ask contractors for a detailed quote?
It’s not something to be scared of. There is a lot of competition in contract work so the more professional businesses will go in-depth to get your business. Ask for a detailed breakdown of what your window or door project needs and how much it’s going to cost. Compare this with a few companies to make sure you are getting the best deal.

Did you know that the government wants your home to be more energy-efficient?
Depending on your area and local laws, there may be incentives to get you to change to more energy-efficient materials for your home. The rebates may apply to the installation of or the actual cost of the materials. Contact your local utility company or Peterborough’s website for specifics.

Did you know that wooden doors are tricky to replace?
It may seem pretty straightforward to replace a door, however, wooden doors are prone to rotting, warping and shrinking. This is common in humid areas or places that are affected by hot summers and cold winters. You could easily just replace the door panel, but if the doorjamb and threshold are damaged, you may need to change the whole thing. Wood doors may also need to be trimmed to fit properly into the frame.

Did you know you could use software to see how that window or door will look in your home?
Programs like Photoshop are commonplace and make it super easy to visualize how everything is going to look before making a single move. If you are a novice to these programs, there are tutorials available online to help make sense of the tools available. You have the power to manipulate size, shape, color, whatever you need to make sure the window or door of your choosing is right for your home.
