About Orillia

In 1875 a village called Orillia became a town and it was designated as a city in 1969. Orillia is situated between two Ontario lakes, Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching.

The city is known for having had an illustrious visitor in the early 17th century, French explorer Samuel de Champlain visited the area during one of his many explorations. There are no known records about the name and there is considerable disagreement about the origin of the city’s name. It is speculated that it originally may have been a Spanish word “orilla” which means lake or river shore.

Orillia’s economy owes much to Casino Rama, a large casino, and entertainment complex with a hotel on a Chippewa reserve. The economy is also fuelled by the tourist industry, customer service, manufacturing and government services.

English and French public education is offered in Orillia and the only Catholic French language elementary school in the city is called École élémentaire catholique Samuel-de-Champlain. The Ontario Provincial Police has its headquarters in Orillia, as well as the Provincial Police Academy and OPP Museum. The city was the first municipality in North America to introduce daylight saving time.

Did you know?

Did you know you that don’t have to take home dozens of samples and color strips from your local hardware store to see how they would look on your windows and doors? You can take a photo of the area and virtually change colours.

Did you know that you can ask your contractor for a cost estimate in writing? You can also ask for an itemized list of a window or door installation job. By breaking down the costs you can see exactly how much you’re paying for each task and compare them with other contractors.

If you’re planning on a do-it-yourself door and window installation project, you don’t have to overwhelm yourself by tackling a huge project all at once. Did you know that you can actually break it down into smaller tasks? Tackling overwhelming projects will burn you out and compromise the quality of your work and the end results.

Did you know that you can ask your window and door installation contractor for references before he begins the job? Ask for at least three recent references.

Did you know that most window and door installation projects generally cost 20-30% more than originally estimated? With this in mind be realistic about how much you’re going to have to shell out and budget accordingly so you won’t literally be left out in the cold by choosing cheap door and window alternatives.
