About New Westminster

New Westminster is the oldest city in the West coast of Canada with a population of 65,976. Queen Victoria chose the name of the city, which is why it’s referred to as the “Royal City”. It was founded in 1859 with the intention of being the first capital of British Columbia.

Royal Engineers chose the location for the city for its natural beauty and because of its proximity to the Fraser River. The infrastructure of the city allows for excellent transportation, which is why its street network still uses the original grid from the city’s inception.

The city has had major changes in its economy since its birth. Initially a primary resources economy of fishing and lumber, New Westminster has evolved from heavy industry and manufacturing to retail, then to service based businesses and finally to an information, fibre-optic and high-tech based economy.

New Westminster celebrates “May Day”, a well-known civic tradition that began in 1870. This festival was originally known as the “Hyack Festival” and is held every Victoria Day weekend. Instead of having a “21-gun salute”, The New Westminster Fire Department created the tradition of the “Anvil Battery Salute”.

New Westminster is home to the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of fame and one of the oldest professional lacrosse teams in Canada, the “New Westminster Salmonbellies”.

Wood has been a popular material since ancient times because of its high-energy efficiency, its beautiful appearance and its ability for customization. Wood can last a very long time if properly maintained. However if it isn’t it, it can rot, warp or lose its natural colour.

Should I replace doors by myself? Or hire an expert?
When thinking of replacing a door, it’s best to seek an expert. Careful inspection is needed to see what needs to be replaced. This can be as simple as changing the doorframe, or replacing everything including the threshold and doorjambs. Rotting is a common issue among wooden doors and can be a mess to treat. Wooden doors are also tricky because you may need to trim its size in order for it to fit properly.

What is Low-E Glass? Do I really need it?
Low-E Glass is just a shortened version for “Low-Emission” glass. This type of glass has a unique coating that reduces roughly 85-90% of the infrared and ultraviolet that comes from the sun. It has long been proven that frequent exposure to UV light is damaging to human health and cause many skin conditions including cancer. Inside your home, it’s responsible for stripping your furniture, paintings, clothing or any other objects of its colour. Low-E glass was engineered to help you extend your life and the life of your home.

What’s the history of windows?
When early humans started using windows, they were literally just holes in the wall. Later these holes would be covered with cloth, animal hides or wood. It wasn’t until the time of Ancient Rome that the first glass windows were used. These windows were not effective and were translucent at best. It would be another thousand years before glass was transparent enough to how they are today. Modern windows are mostly filled with glass, though transparent plastic materials are commonly used.
