About Markham

Otherwise known as mɑrkəm, Markham is a city that is part of the Great Toronto Area in York Region and is made up of 212.47 km (82.04 sq miles). The population of Markham is 302,000 and it is bounded by Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Stouffville and Pickering and it changed its designation to become a city in 2012.

Markham’s economy has seen significant growth since the 1980’s with light industry and businesses moving in. It is also considered the Hi-Tech Capital of Canada with IBM, Motorola, Lucent, Toshiba, Honeywell, Apple and Genesis Microchip all having Markham addresses for their head offices.

The city is in close proximity to Toronto and therefore has similar weather conditions. Markham may be 1 C (1.8) F cooler than it is in downtown Toronto for the summer and winter months. Summers can be warm with temperatures reaching in the high 30’s C (84 F) and the winters can be as low as -30 C (-22) on an extremely cold day.

The area is surrounded by farmland and marsh, but in the last decade, residential growth has cut into that green space. Markham is home to the Markham Museum, Markham Little Theatre, Markham Youth Theatre, and the Markham Public Library. Markham is also home to the Markham Fair which is one of the largest fairs in Canada and has been held every year in early October for four day since 1844.

Interesting Information

Is your home air tight?
Perhaps you are wondering if your windows are air tight and you have not felt a draft. You can do a simple test to determine if your windows and doors are providing an air tight energy solution by simply lighting an incense stick, candle, or smoke pen near your windows and or doors. (This may take a few minutes as drafts sometimes are subject to outside wind, so you might want to try this a couple of times to make sure.) After you have lit your testing mechanism watch the smoke, if it tends to drift horizontally you will know that there is a draft that is coming from the window or door that will likely need to be fixed either by replacement, caulking or weather stripping.

Getting rid of single panes is not a pain.
Most single pane windows will not provide you with the best energy efficiency that you should have in your home. You can cover the single panes with storm windows or you can start to replace the single panes throughout your home with double pane windows that have low emissivity gas. These windows are the optimum choice as they will keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Window replacement can be expensive, but if you replace them one by one or room by room the expense should become more manageable and your energy efficiency will be improved.

Install it right
After you have determined that you need to replace some doors and windows, install them correctly. Choose a contractor that has experience in window and door replacement and has past clients that recommend them and is a member of the better business bureau. If your windows are installed incorrectly, your warranty may become void so choose your contractor wisely.

How long will the window last?
The choice in the quality of windows that is available to you is vast, as is their warranties. Most windows come with a 10 to 20 year guaranty, but some less expensive windows may only guaranty 3 to five years. The guaranty may be for the glass package only without the frame so it is best if you understand your warranty and know how you can make that warranty last as long as possible.
