About Leamington

Leamington, Ontario is known as the “tomato capital” of Canada due to the fact that it is home to a large H. J. Heinz Company factory and its vicinity to 4km of tomato crops. Leamington is a municipality of Essex County in southern Ontario.

Leamington is known for having one of the highest number of greenhouses in North America where produce such as tomatoes, cucumbers, roses and flowers are produced. This is possible because the area enjoys among the warmest climates in the country. A notable feature of Leamington is the town’s water tower built in the shape and colour of a giant tomato. The city’s tourist information centre is also in the hard-to-miss shape and colour of a tomato.

Leamington is situated on a migrating birds site near Point Pelee National Park on the north shore of Lake Erie, this attracts bird watchers from all over Canada, it also attracts naturalists and bird lovers from around the world. This is also a major tourist attraction for the city. As is the yearly “Tomato Festival” each August that inaugurates the tomato harvesting season.

In 2010 a violent tornado swept through Leamington considerably damaging buildings, landmarks and the Marina – fortunately there were no deaths.

Doors Across a Historical Timeline

The Gates of Paradise
During the 12th century an important cathedral was built in Florence, Italy, known as the Baptistery of Florence. An artist and sculptor, Lorenzo Ghilberti, was selected to design the north entry doors of the building. He produced impressive gilded bronze doors with 28 panels depicting scenes from the New Testament. It took the artist 21 years to complete them. Florence, like many other European states had been devastated by the black plague, and Florentine authorities had these doors built as an offering, they were hoping that this votive would spare thousands of lives. They were named The Gates of Paradise!

5,000-Year Old Door
In 2010 Swiss archaeologists unearthed a door that likely dates back 5,000 years. The door was remarkably well preserved and looked “good” according to the accounts given by the archaeologists who found the door. It is a poplar wood door with well-preserved hinges. It was likely part of a village of stilt houses found near lakes in the pre-Alpine region. Archaeologists used tree rings to determine the age of the door.

Ancient Door Engineering
Ancient Greeks and Romans used sliding and folding doors as well as single and double doors. Paintings and surviving ancient buildings show doors with multiple panels carved in stone. Bronze doors with impressive metal work are visible in numerous ancient buildings in Rome – the Pantheon is one of these. An example of a Roman folding door dating back to the 1st century A.D. can be seen by visiting Pompeii in Naples, Italy.
